Albert Baertsoen did very few pastel drawings, and this one is also quite exceptional in its size. The artist saw the view of the grounds from the Voortman house as a scene that exuded a mood of peace and tranquillity. The indistinct contours, the hazy reflections and the agitated sketchy line all create an atmospheric charge that link Baertsoen to contemporary Intimism. This movement added a more symbolic tension to the loose technique and colour use of Impressionism.
