Aman-Jean's post-impressionist paintings, pastels and engravings are mostly portraits or evocations of symbolist themes. Thus he belongs to the 'peintres de l'âme'. The Girl with the Goat is a typical example. A young, modest girl is cherishing a goat in her arms. With gentle strokes, the artist expresses this tender, intimate moment. Like many of his portraits, he places the figure in front of a decorative background. In this painting, the elegant rose bush forms a beautiful decoration around the girl.
