Guillaume Vogels sought inspiration in landscapes, seascapes, still lifes and cityscapes in which the representation of atmospheric impressions fascinated him more than a static, anecdotal portrayal of reality. This beach scene owes its form to the structure and the broad, heavy brushstrokes. The schematic figures accentuate the vastness of the scene. With this work, Vogels reveals himself to be exceptional colourist. He was one of the first in Belgium to mix paint directly upon the canvas. Although the composition has a clear structure, the sketchy style of painting gives the impression of a snapshot.
