Auguste Godeaux was born in 1850 to a simple working-class family in Chapelle-lez-Herlaimont. He worked in a workshop at the age of 14, but was able to work his way up through evening and weekend classes. In 1883, he became director of the "Ecole industrielle" in Morlanwelz. On 6 July 1913, the 30th anniversary of his directorship was celebrated. Godeaux received a bronze medallion with his effigy of which this medal is a reduction. A total of 206 copies were struck.
