In about 1900 Henri Martin moved to La Bastide du Vert, a village near Cahors (Midi-Pyrénées). This landscape gives us a glimpse of the banks of the River Vert, a tributary of the Lot. The bright light, bare trees, autumn colours and smoking chimneys all tell us that winter is just beginning. The quivering brushwork and also the complex structure of the composition are reminiscent of Monet and Pissarro.
