This plaque was designed for the 10th Congress of Navigation in Milan in 1905. The two engravers, Bonisegna (obverse) and Castiglione (reverse) linked the event to two great figures of Italian history: Columbus, explorer and Leonardo da Vinci, artist and inventor. The obverse depicts their paired busts; the reverse shows Columbus' sailing ships on one panel and Da Vinci's welcome in a harbour on another. The alternating direction of obverse and reverse is rather unusual in medal art.
