After a period of mainly symbolic and allegorical subjects, around 1900 many French engravers opted for representations of everyday life with working people such as scissor grinders and spinners (O. Yencesse), farmers and farm labourers (Coudray), painters (Vernon), as well as depictions of animals and landscapes. This depiction of a medallist at work, on which Dupré masterfully depicts himself, is also in line with this trend. The reverse shows two women admiring the finished medal, still in its box, on the terrace of their garden.
