In his day, Jean-Louis Forain was widely known as a caricaturist. His work as a painter showed the influence of Edgar Degas, who was a close friend. Forain joined him in taking part in the impressionists’ exhibitions in Paris. This painting depicts two innocent-looking dancers who are attracting the desirous gaze of a somewhat older, sagging and drunken bourgeois gentleman. This was a subject Forain painted regularly. What is striking here is the contrast between the impressionist rendering of the dancers’ tutus and the more restrained painting style in the man’s sombre black eveningwear.
