Edward VII, the son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Sasken-Coburg succeeded his mother as king of England in 1901. This medal was issued on the occasion of his accession to the throne on 9 August 1902. It depicts on the obverse the royal with his wife Queen Alaxandra. On the reverse, Westminster Abbey is depicted. More than a hundred different coronation medals were issued for this event. Edward VII reigned only from 1901 to 1910. As Prince of Wales, he was mostly kept out of state affairs and, as a result, his kingship was less successful than that of his mother. However, his love of sport and play and his relaxation of court etiquette made him very popular with the population.
