Richard Wagner (1813-1883) built his own theatre in Bayreuth in 1871 with the few resources he had. With financial help from King Ludwig, he was able to stage the first performance there in August 1876. Since then, there has been an annual summer festival at "Richard Wagner's Festival Theatre", where his own works and those of his successors are performed. It has long been operated by the Wagner family. The reverse of this portrait plaque of Wagner shows the Bayreuth theatre.
