On a table that is partially covered with a drab cloth, lies a turkey that has been plucked of all but a few feathers. The artist has made a graceful arrangement of the head and neck. Part of the turkey’s wing, with a drop of blood at the tip, can be seen in front of the mortar. The chickens to the upper right have not yet been stripped of their feathers, and blood seeps from the beak of the largest. The turkey’s white flesh forms a sharp contrast with the dark background. The mortar might possibly allude to transience.
