On the initiative of the Minister of the Interior, a competition was organised between some twenty artists for the engraving of a medal. The obverse of the medal should bear the image of the King and certainly the two dates 1830 and 1905. The reverse side was left to the inspiration of the artist. Amongst the fourteen participants, Godried Devreese was unanimously selected as the winner and was awarded the sum of 8,000 francs. On the reverse he depicted an allegorical representation of Belgium in the form of a woman walking towards the rising sun, accompanied by a lion and surrounded by a coat of arms and flag.
