In 1894, the World Exhibition was organised in Antwerp for the second time. It was opened by Leopold II on 5 May. It was a great success with as highlight the reconstruction of "Old Antwerp" realised by painter Van Kuyck and architect Eugène Geefs. This idea would later also be repeated in Brussels and Ghent. As usual, many medals were issued to immortalise the exhibition. The official commemorative medal was ordered from Michaux and, depending on the demand, was struck up to three times a week in the exhibition buildings themselves. On the obverse is the effigy of King Leopold II, on the reverse a globe floating above the exhibition buildings and the coat of arms of Antwerp.
