Hunting of the Calydonian Boar has been part of the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent since 1899. It was one of the first works to be donated to the City of Ghent by the Friends of the Museum, a society founded in 1897. It is an early copy of a painting by Peter Paul Rubens. When Oeneus, the king of Calydon, forgot to honour the goddess Artemis during a great thanksgiving feast for the god Dionysus, the goddess sent a giant boar to the region. It destroyed the vineyards and cornfields, killed livestock and forced the local inhabitants to flee. A hunt was organized, and the hero Meleager killed the monstrous beast with a spear.
