Based on the example of his teacher Gustave Den Duyts, Albert Baertsoen painted evening and often winter townscapes in rather unemphatic, muted colours. He also painted landscapes, including scenes near Dendermonde and on the Belgian coast. From 1895 to 1897 he often worked in Nieuwpoort and Diksmuide. In the painting he depicted the old craft of rope-making. In the centre is the rope walk, which might extend for several hundred metres, above which strands of fibre were hung. At the end of the walk was a wheel which twisted the fibres into rope.
