Like many Scandinavian artists, Hugo Frederik Salmson travelled to Paris at the start of his career to continue his studies. In the late 1870s he was a celebrated artist at the Salon there. His idealised, slightly theatrical paintings were admired by his contemporaries. His work focuses on rural life in Picardy as well as in Skane in Southern Sweden, which he visited every summer from 1883 onwards. Visiting the Tenant Farmerswife was probably painted in this region and depicts four chattering country women seated at a long, heavy rustic table. The painting exudes an atmosphere of peace and harmony and reflects what Salmson regarded as the idyllic countryside.
