During his lifetime Romantic painter Nicaise De Keyser was renowned as a painter of monumental history paintings, religious works and portraits. De Keyser interpreted one of the most dramatic moments in the New Testament in this painting. The painter emphasizes the drama of the moment and focused on the sorrow of the adults who were driven to madness, protectively covering the children’s corpses with their bodies. In the background the massacre is still going on.
