Winter Scene in Ghent by Pierre François De Noter is an attractive and faithful rendering of the confluence of the Rivers Lys and Lieve as seen from behind the fish market at the docks, looking towards the Graslei. The topography of the view has barely changed since then, unlike the area surrounding St Bavo’s Cathedral and the Reep in Ghent. In keeping with the tradition of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Dutch cityscapes, De Noter has populated both paintings with tiny figures. Cityscapes were his favourite subject and he also painted Antwerp, Mechelen, Bruges and especially Ghent, where he lived from 1810 onwards. The precise rendering of material and colour reflect De Noter’s skill as a painter and through his special lighting effects and varied use of colour he shows great sensitivity in creating an atmosphere.
