Bartholomeus Johannes Van Hove painted mainly cityscapes and church interiors in a realistic style. He is regarded as an important forerunner of the Hague School. In most of his cityscapes the emphasis lies on church architecture. In Dutch Town by Moonlight we are struck mainly by the mysterious and ominous atmosphere of night under a full moon. It is not known which city is depicted here.
