The French painter Albert Bartholomé, depicted on this medal, lost his wife at a young age in 1887 and designed a moving funerary monument for her. From this point on, he devoted himself mainly to sculpture, especially to designing funerary monuments. He became best known in 1899, for the monumental work on Père-Lachaise in Paris, the 'Monument aux Morts', embedded in a hill. Engraver Henri Kautsch wanted to pay tribute to his friend's masterpiece with this plaque. On the front you will find Bartholomé's portrait and on the reverse of the plaque, the 'Monument aux Morts' was engraved.
