1860 IMPRESSIONISM AND SYMBOLISM
In the midst of the turbulent developments in Franco-Belgian landscape painting, 'figure painter' Jan Verhas held onto a detailed realism and an academic style. In order words, he was certainly not a great innovator. This Master Painter from 1877 is a case in point: the painter has observed his subject sharply and has created a gentle atmosphere with pure lines and colours. Jan and his brother Franz Verhas belonged to the so-called Dendermonde School.
