1860 IMPRESSIONISM AND SYMBOLISM
This canvas from c. 1870-1871 is typical of the so-called 'new' landscapes that Hippolyte Boulenger produced at this time of his life, painted with tempestuous abandon, in a heavy impasto, frequently unfinished, and rendered in unusually realistic colours. These works testify to an intense experience of nature and of the artist's romantic predilection for extreme weather conditions such as thunderstorms.
