1860 IMPRESSIONISM AND SYMBOLISM
Daubigny chose a moment when the moon was rising in Barbizon to paint a mysterious nocturnal forest scene. The dark trees on the left are monumental, while the smaller specimens on the right are painted more roughly, with a loose touch that was experienced as very modern by his contemporaries. This impression of trees in the moonlight shows hardly any details.
