Realism in the Netherlands Still LIfe

Realism in the Netherlands  Intro

While the Baroque reigned supreme in the Catholic Southern Netherlands, the art of the so-called Golden Age in Calvinist Holland focused more on realism. The difference is already clear in the genres that were popular in the North at this time: individual and group portraits, still lifes, landscapes, church interiors, peasant scenes...Although the Ghent collection mainly contains works of rather modest size, acquired from 19th-century private collections, they constitute a quite representative ensemble.
