This portrait from 1581 is the last known work of Frans Pourbus the Elder that has been signed and dated. The identity of the woman is unknown to us. The most striking elements of this portrait are the woman's aristocratic bearing and bright eyes. She is dressed, according to the fashion of the rich of her age, in black velvet and pearls and white silk threaded with gold. Her face is elegantly framed by a small white winged cap and a fine neck-frill. On account of his extraordinarily refined brush technique, Pourbus was generally reckoned one of the best portraitists in the Netherlands by his contemporaries. A striking feature of his style is the idealisation of his models.
