The animal painter Paul de Vos was the younger brother of Cornelis de Vos. As a collaborator of Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck and Jan Wildens, it is possible that he was also a student of Frans Snijders, his brother-in-law. The colourful works by De Vos are characterized by their great precision. Over twenty different types of bird are depicted here, all of which are clearly distinguishable and easily identifiable. The spoils of the hunt are depicted in a sweeping landscape with mountains in the distance. A dead hare hangs on one of the trees to the right, while a blue heron lies on the ground nearby. Partridges, woodcocks, a duck and other small birds, including woodpeckers, finches, great tits and a goldfinch, are distributed across the foreground to the left.
