Jan Boeckhorst received his training in Jordaens’ studio. In 1633 he became an independent master in St Luke’s Guild in Antwerp. He was highly regarded in Antwerp art circles and worked regularly with Rubens and Frans Snijders. Several of Boeckhorst’s ‘modelli’ for a series of mythological tapestries on the story of Apollo have been preserved. The oil sketch of Apollo and Python shown here is one of them. This sketch gives us a good idea of the artist’s dynamic and expressive style. Ovid tells us the story of Apollo, the Greek god of the sun, and the snake monster Python. A few days after he was born, Apollo killed the Python who guarded the oracle at Delphi and terrorised the surrounding area, and so became master of the oracle. Proud of his first heroic deed, the young god spoke scornfully about archery as a skill to Cupid the god of love. Cupid punished him for this by causing him to become infatuated with the nymph Daphne, who despised him.
