The Man of Sorrows, also known as the Angels Pietà, became a popular theme in painting and sculpture from the fourteenth century onwards. The resurrected Christ shows man his wounds. He is seated on the edge of a sarcophagus surrounded by grieving angels. The gold background is an indication of Christ’s divinity. The portrayal therefore symbolises his immortality and sums up the whole story of the Birth of Christ, the man-god, in one image. The twisted body and expressive rendering of the wounds contrasts with the calmness of his face.
