Like many artists Josse Sébastien Van den Abeele spent some time in Italy. He returned home with landscapes such as A view of the Coliseum in Rome. The Roman monuments, the city’s landscape and its picturesque inhabitants provided Van den Abeele with an endless source of inspiration. The shifting landscape and the decreasing intensity of the colour palette gradually direct the onlooker’s eyes into the distance. In such works the Romantic interest in ruins is often combined with an archaeological interest in antique remains. The presence of figures is secondary and emphasizes the buildings’ monumental character.
