The presentation of Khnopff’s sister and regular model, Marguerite, clad in a rich garment, drawn into herself by the scent of incense, is an archetypical presentation of Symbolism. Disillusioned by daily reality and the consequences of industrialisation, the Symbolists sought salvation in an ideal, harmonic world. Khnopff brings a sense of contemplation in Incense, the silence, the dazzling scent, the luxuriant dust. In its elongated Japanese format, the presentation possesses a substantial decorative value. This is all brought into a drawing with a master craftsmanship that only Khnopff possessed. Drawing, for that matter, was at least as important as painting for Khnopff. His most well-known works all exist as drawings or pastels.
