The Swede Elias Magnus Fries was a prominent mycologist, the study of fungi and mushrooms. His publications circulated in the circle around Ernest and Mariette Rousseau, Ensor's Brussels friends. In Ensor literature, the portrait is usually described as 'Le botaniste scandinave Frise', probably after the example of Taevernier, 1973 (1999), no. 3.
