Ghent-born painter Lieven De Winne became a household name thanks to his series of large portraits of Leopold I. The bourgeoisie and nobility often commissioned him to paint their portraits. The artist's colour palette gradually evolved from an accurate drawing style to a blurrier one, with a preference for warm colours and soft contrasts between light and dark hues. De Winne managed to perfectly capture the character of the people he portrayed, with great sensitivity and discretion. The museum collection includes many portraits by De Winne, including this portrait of his friend, sculptor Paul De Vigne. The latter, in turn, created a bust of De Winne, and in 1881 made a posthumous homage to the painter with his allegorical depiction of 'Immortality'. Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) showed his admiration for his Ghent-born friend Paul De Vigne through a portrait bust.
