Félix De Vigne was a member of a Ghent family of artists and became particularly famous as a painter of historical scenes. Some of these, such as Free Fair in Ghent in the Middle Ages, belong to the collection of the Ghent Museum of Fine Arts. Eventually, he specialised in the portrait genre. In addition, he was also active as an engraver and art historian. Between 1835 and 1847, for instance, he published several art-historical works, among which the Vademecum der schilders (Painter's Vademecum).
