Gérard-Hubert-Léon Janssen, born in Maastricht in 1849, became a director of the Brussels tram company in 1879 and of Société Générale de Belgique in 1903. This Belgian businessman was awarded his baron title in 1909; a year later, he played an important role as chairman of the Executive Committee of the Brussels World Fair. It is in this capacity that he was honoured with this portrait medal. Twenty silver and 75 bronze examples were struck. On the reverse side, an angel with a trumpet is depicted next to a statue of St Michael, the patron saint of Brussels.
