In about 1865, César De Cock discovered rural Normandy. After the war of 1870 between Germany and France, he settled permanently in Gasny, a village neighbouring the better-known Giverny, where Claude Monet was later to establish himself. Gasny is on the River Epte, a tributary of the Seine. Many of the plentiful landscapes De Cock painted around Gasny were done ‘en plein air’ – out of doors.
